TerraMax: The Brawn
The TerraMax vehicle is based on Oshkosh’s Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR) defense truck platform. The MTVR was designed for the US Marine Corps with a 70% off-road mission profile.
The TerraMax is new and improved over the 2005 Grand Challenge version. Mods to the chassis provide for a better dynamic capability in an urban environment. Just as tough as last year’s model, this time around, TerraMax is a 4x4 rather than a 6x6 for better handling and maneuverability.
All-wheel drive, TAK-4® independent suspension and central tire are still standard, mainly because they are so well suited to the true military environment – where trucks drive on roads and city streets, but have to be able to tackle dirt roads, rocks, dips and holes on a regular basis. This MTVR can handle 60% grades and 30% side slopes, and a 425-hp Cat C-12 engine provides plenty of power, regardless of the environment.
Oshkosh’s Command Zone® drive-by-wire technology allows computers to control the steering via a servomotor and direct electronic control of the accelerator, brakes and transmission.
